Fairy Penguins of New Zealand - by Patty K Mooney

Little Blue Penguin, Blue Penguin, or Fairy Pe...Image via WikipediaWay, way, way back in 1990 (seems like a century ago) Mark and I backpacked through Australia and saw the fairy penguins of Phillip Island. I was so touched by the sight of them that I cried. I always felt sad that I had not been able to capture them in a photograph or video at the time, but just this evening I discovered this youtube video that pretty much duplicates the experience we had.

Fairy penguins, otherwise known as "little penguins" are the smallest and cutest penguins on Earth. They live not on ice or snow, but in burrows on the southern coasts of Australia and New Zealand. They spend their days out to sea, hunting for food. And then at night, when predators are absent, they make their way in to their nesting groups.

This video is necessarily dark because it is shot at night, and although eight minutes seems a bit long, you can scroll through to the cuter parts where the penguins shuffle towards their burrows. I don't think there is anything more adorable than a fairy penguin.

Oh, thank you so much for posting this. I had never heard of Fairy Penguins, before. When I aske my hubby if he had ever heard of penguins that live in burrows, he settled back and asked, "Okay; what's the joke?"

We enjoyed learning about the Fairy Penguins and appreciate you sharing such an awesome video. Thanks.

Thanks Yaya! I am surprised that there is not more "press" on these little guys. There's a lot more to learn about them than what I posted. They are absolutely fascinating!
