Making Escapes - A Poem by Patty Mooney

Temple of Zeus in Athens at Athens.Image via Wikipedia

It will not be easy
this time. This time
an Egyptian boy,
black olive eyes,
rattan hair.
Our hearts handed over
on the train
to Piraeus, port town
on the fringe of Athens.

I could have caught the boat
to the islands sooner,

I could have sailed
hours ahead, from out
of the deft butterfly collector's fingers.

I wrote this in 1980 when I was 25 and had parted from my boyfriend, George, to travel alone to Greece. I recently came across the journal containing this poem, that I had written throughout my journey and it reads like fiction to me now.
